SACS claimed their first win in three years in the Western Province Premier A league when they defeated Bishops 20-13 in a dramatic match on Saturday.

Trailing 0-13 at the break the home side rallied back to score twenty unanswered points in the second half. The SACS hero was left winger Ryan Johnstone who sauntered over for the match winner after they had started a counter attack on their own line. With time up, the Newlands based outfit held the ball through numerous phases until they created numbers out wide for Johnstone’s try, which sent the home fans delirious.

Their fight back can be attributed to combative hooker Gino Lupini, who scored at the start of the second half. Chris Smith, the home sides general, also had his kicking boots on as he contributed ten points on the day via a penalty, two conversions and a drop goal. SACS have had some lean times of late, but Saturday’s results would have buoyed the Newlands based outfit on as they finish their season off against traditional rivals Wynberg away on a winning note after losing the previous encounter(19-5)

A clearly elated coach of the SACS side Graeme Wepenaar said to Canterbury SA,” It was fantastic to get a win over a big school and the guys dug deep for the result. We delivered a classy second half performance and the players need to take the credit for the way in which they showed a willingness to go for the win at the death.”

Wepenaar was however quick to point out that his chargers will need to come back to earth as they prepare for their final clash of the season.
