| Grey day for Paul Roos |
|
Grey College of Bloemfontein maintained their unbeaten season when they defeated Paul Roos 36-35 in a last minute thriller at the Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch on Saturday. Grey outscored their opponents by scoring five tries to two on the day .Paul Roos only have themselves to blame for the loss and having lead 35-29 with time up on the scoreboard they turned over possesion instead of kicking the ball out. Grey attacked from deep within their half and surged up field before replacement Meyer van Tonder forced his way over the hosts tryline from close quarters. Free State Cravenweek player Jannie Strumpher then took the all important conversion and nailed it giving Grey College the narrowest of wins and maintaining their stellar season. Paul Roos were duly aggrieved at the final whistle with the referee at the sending off of play maker Michael Hazner, who was red carded for a tip tackle, a decision that ultimately swung matters in favour of the Bloemfontein side .Despite having no less than six players unavailable, four players present with the SA Schools side and two other players out injured, the Grey side showed remarkable composure to snatch the win on the weekend highlighting them as the premier rugby school in the country. For the visitor’s scrumhalf Arrie Vosloo was a constant thorn in the Paul Roos side on attack with his sniping breaks around the fringes and his intelligent kicking out of hand while for the hosts pivot Andre le Roux had a dream day with the boot contributing 25 points via seven penalties and two conversions. Grey College will again finish top of the Canterbury Schools rankings for 2011.What is even more remarkable is that they have only lost once in 83 games (2009 to Paul Roos,9-3).
