SACS concluded their season on a high after snatching a dramatic victory defeating rivals Wynberg 29-26 away from home on Saturday.

The home sides had a surfeit of possession and were camped in the SACS half for long periods of time, however they could not convert their pressure into points due to lack of composure and crucial mistakes near the opposition goal line. It took twenty minutes before Wynberg’s SA Schools No. 8 Sikhumbuzo Notshe did eventually cut though and offloaded for wing Lwandile Sompontsha to score to scamper round and score a seven pointer giving the home side a 7-0 lead.

SACS though managed to hang in there and Wayne van Niekerk finished crossed the whitewash just before the break. Pivot Chris Smith duly obliged and the sides were locked at 7-7 at the interval.

After the break Wynberg’s ball in hand policy paid dividends and yielded two quick tries to give them a 19-7 lead. The first try was a penalty try after the referee had adjudicated that SACS had collapsed a driving maul close to the own line. The second try though came through centre Justin Scott who dotted down after the home side had held onto the ball through numerous phases.

Trailing by 12 points SACS decided to keep the ball amoung their forward pack and the pressure told on the hosts. Gio Lupini barged over close to the line before Chris Smith weaved through the home side defence to dive over for the score.

With the visitors sensing a rare win they forged their way up field. This enabled Smith to land a snap drop to give SACS a 22-19 lead. The Newlands based side was applying all the pressure now and it was Lupini’s breaks that lead to Josh Jacobson’s score .Jacobsen’s try was to be the final nail in the Wynberg coffin and with Smith adding the extras it gave SACS a 29-19 lead with 2 minutes left to play.

Notshe, then showed why he is a player to watch for the future as his brilliant 50 metre solo effort ended up in a consolation try on the hooter, the try giving the score line some respectability, however it was too little too late as SACS ended victors on the day 29-26.

A special mention to the coaching staff of SACS, Graeme Wepenaar and his colleges, they have now won two games in succession and after a few tough seasons and have silenced many critics. Kudos also to Headmaster Ken Ball has also been instrumental in the schools rugby revival and the hard work that has been put in over the years is starting to pay dividends.

SACS rugby is most definitely on the rise.
