Bishops turned the tables on their first round loss (34-18) defeating Rondebosch 37-12 on Saturday. The first half was a tight contest with both forward packs hammering away at each other. The visitors were first to get on the scoreboard via their SA Schools pivot, Tim Swiel, playing at fullback for the match, slotting an early penalty. Bosch’s response was immediate and left winger Selom Gavor was the recipient of some good attacking play by the home side he scored in the corner. Hilio de Abreu converted from the touch line to give Bosch a 7-3 lead. Bishops then surged up-field the lead swopped hands for the last time in the match when Andrew Jones-Davies, darted over for his try. Swiel converted and the visitors entered the half time break with a slender 10-7 lead. The second stanza was all Bishops as they produced a scintillating display of running rugby scoring five tries in the process. The chief architect in their victory was Bishops centre Johnny Kotze, whose clever interplay with Swiel, freed up space on the outside which enabled Bishops to play their renowned running brand of rugby putting the ball into space and playing with width. To the disappointment of the home crowd Bosch ran out of steam and looked lethargic against a motivated Bishops side that played an attractive brand of running rugby and outclassed their derby rivals on the day. Speaking to Canterbury SA Bishops assistant coach Kevin Foote said, “ We were really happy with our second half display. Our guys were motivated for the game and wanted to set the record straight after the first round loss. We managed to get continuity in the later part of the match and that freed our wide runners up.” With the regular season having concluded the attention now turns to the annual Villager sevens rugby tournament that take place on Friday.
